Holden Chapel Restoration

This historic preservation project centers around the transformation of Holden Chapel, a building in Harvard Yard dating back to 1744. The intervention phase of the project employs contemporary design visualization tools to reimagine and adapt the existing structure while honoring its rich history. The proposed modifications include repainting millwork in an off-white color to align with contextual buildings, restoring the original arched door, and introducing a revolving glass door to establish a visual connection between the interior and the exterior. The interior treatment involves a complete overhaul, retaining the colonial character with nuanced details like capped heaters and a handrail-adorned mezzanine. The design aims to strike a balance between historical preservation and modern functionality, prompting a discussion on the importance of employing thoughtful, contemporary design methods to honor the past and contribute to the ongoing narrative of historic spaces like Holden Chapel.
